چکیده

Logconcave functions represent the current frontier of efficient algorithms for sampling, optimization and integration in Rn [LV06a]. Efficient sampling algorithms to sample according to a probability density (to which the other two problems can be reduced) relies on good isoperimetry which is known to hold for arbitrary logconcave densities. In this paper, we extend this frontier in two ways: first, we characterize convexity-like conditions that imply good isoperimetry, i.e., what condition on function values along every line guarantees good isoperimetry? The answer turns out to be the set of (1/(n−1))-harmonic concave functions in Rn; we also prove that this is the best possible characterization along every line, of functions having good isoperimetry. Next, we give the first efficient algorithm for sampling according to such functions with complexity depending on a smoothness parameter. Further, noting that the multivariate Cauchy density is an important distribution in this class, we exploit certain properties of the Cauchy density to give an efficient sampling algorithm based on random walks with a mixing time that matches the current best bounds known for sampling logconcave functions.

Sampling s-Concave Functions: The Limit of Convexity Based Isoperimetry

Efficient sampling, integration and optimization algorithms for logconcave functions [BV04,KV06,LV06a] rely on the good isoperimetry of these functions. We extend this to show that −1/(n− 1)-concave functions have good isoperimetry, and moreover, using a characterization of functions based on their values along every line, we prove that this is the largest class of functions with good isoperime...

Some Convexity Properties of Dirichlet Series with Positive Terms

Some basic results for Dirichlet series ψ with positive terms via log-convexity properties are pointed out. Applications for Zeta, Lambda and Eta functions are considered. The concavity of the function 1/ψ is explored and, as a main result, it is proved that the function 1/ζ is concave on (1,∞) . As a consequence of this fundamental result it is noted that Zeta at the odd positive integers is b...

(m1,m2)-Convexity and Some New Hermite-Hadamard Type Inequalities

In this manuscript, a new class of extended (m1,m2)-convex and concave functions is introduced. After some properties of (m1,m2)-convex functions have been given, the inequalities obtained with Hölder and Hölder-İşcan and power-mean and improwed power-mean integral inequalities have been compared and it has been shown that the inequality with Hölder-İşcan inequality gives a better approach than...

The starlikeness, convexity, covering theorem and extreme points of p-harmonic mappings

The main aim of this paper is to introduce three classes $H^0_{p,q}$, $H^1_{p,q}$ and $TH^*_p$ of $p$-harmonic mappings and discuss the properties of mappings in these classes. First, we discuss the starlikeness and convexity of mappings in $H^0_{p,q}$ and $H^1_{p,q}$. Then establish the covering theorem for mappings in $H^1_{p,q}$. Finally, we determine the extreme points of the class $TH^*_{p}$.

Escaping the Local Minima via Simulated Annealing: Optimization of Approximately Convex Functions

We consider the problem of optimizing an approximately convex function over a bounded convex set in Rn using only function evaluations. The problem is reduced to sampling from an approximately log-concave distribution using the Hit-and-Run method, which is shown to have the same O∗ complexity as sampling from log-concave distributions. In addition to extend the analysis for log-concave distribu...
